Claude Fable 5 Free Week: Included Through July 7, Explained
On paid plans (Pro, Max, Team, select Enterprise), Claude Fable 5 is included for up to 50% of your weekly usage limits through July 7, 2026. After that it does not disappear — only the billing changes: from included to pay-as-you-go usage credits at standard API rates. It is not a 7-day availability cutoff.
Is Claude Fable 5 included through July 7, or does it disappear? (billing, explained)
Claude Fable 5 is included for up to 50% of your weekly usage limits through July 7, 2026 on paid plans — Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise. After July 7 it does not disappear — only the billing changes, from included to usage credits at standard API rates. This is a billing transition, not a 7-day availability cutoff.
Here is the sentence Anthropic published, quoted exactly from the redeployment announcement:
“For Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans, Fable 5 will be included for up to 50% of weekly usage limits through July 7, after which it will be available via usage credits.”
Two things are doing the work in that sentence. First, “included … through July 7” describes the no-extra-charge window. Second, “after which it will be available via usage credits” tells you the model keeps working past that date. Nowhere does it say access ends. If you have read a headline claiming Fable 5 is “free for 7 days then gone,” that headline is wrong on both counts — it was never free on the raw API, and it does not go away on July 8.

What “included for up to 50% of weekly usage limits” actually means
Claude.ai and Claude Code subscriptions do not meter you per token. They use a weekly usage limit system: a rolling short window (roughly a 5-hour cap) plus a weekly ceiling that resets on a schedule (Max plans reset weekly). Your normal models draw down that same shared allotment.
“Up to 50% of weekly usage limits” means that during July 1–7, Fable 5 usage may consume up to half of your plan’s weekly allotment — at no extra charge beyond your existing subscription. The other half of your weekly budget stays reserved for everything else. It is a cap on how much included Fable 5 you can pull, not a cap on whether you can use it. If you never come close to your weekly limit, you will likely never feel the 50% ceiling at all.
One thing to keep straight: this “included” benefit lives entirely on the subscription side (Claude.ai / Claude Code). It is not an API discount. On the Claude API, Fable 5 (claude-fable-5) is metered as always — $10 / $50 per MTok input/output — on July 1, on July 7, and on July 8 alike. There is no “free week” on the raw API. If you build on the API directly, nothing in this announcement changes your bill.
The July 7 transition: from included to usage credits, not a shutdown
The whole timeline is short. On July 1, 2026, Fable 5 returned globally across the Claude Platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork. From July 1 through July 7, it is included as described above. On July 7, that included window closes. What flips is a single field on your account: the way continued Fable 5 usage is billed.
Before July 7, Fable 5 usage counts against your weekly limit at no extra cost (up to the 50% cap). After July 7, once you would otherwise be blocked, continued Fable 5 usage draws on usage credits instead. The model is the same, the endpoints are the same, the quality is the same. Only the meter behind it changes. Read that carefully, because it is exactly where the misconception lives: nothing is being turned off.
What usage credits are and how to turn them on (Settings > Usage)
Usage credits are Anthropic’s mechanism for letting Pro, Max, and Team subscribers keep working after they hit their included usage limits, per the Claude Help Center. They are billed at standard API pricing rates — the same $10 / $50 per MTok that Fable 5 costs on the API — and you prepay for them.
You enable them yourself; they are not on by default. In the Claude app:
# Path to enable usage credits
Settings > Usage > "Usage credits" section > Enable
You stay in control of spend. In that same Settings > Usage panel you can:
- Set a monthly spend limit with “Adjust limit” (a hard cap on how much you will be charged), or
- Set it to unlimited if you never want to be blocked mid-task, and
- Prepay the balance you want available.
If you would rather not opt in at all, that is fine too. Without usage credits enabled, you simply revert to your plan’s normal behavior once your included limit is reached — you are not charged, you are just paused until your window resets.
Myth-buster: no, Fable 5 does not vanish on July 8
Let me put the correction plainly, because it is the reason this post exists.
The myth
- "Fable 5 is free for 7 days"
- "Access ends on July 8"
- "You lose the model after July 7"
- "It's a 7-day trial"
What's true
- Included (not free) for up to 50% of weekly limits, July 1–7
- Fully available after July 7
- Only the billing changes: included → usage credits
- API price ($10/$50 per MTok) never changed
There is no availability cliff. July 7 is a billing date, not an access date. On July 8, Fable 5 is exactly as reachable as it was on July 6 — you just pay for continued heavy usage through usage credits (at API rates) instead of pulling it from your included weekly allotment. If your normal week never exceeds your limits, you may not notice July 7 passing at all.
The fine print: new classifiers and the Opus 4.8 fallback
The redeploy shipped alongside new safety classifiers. On Anthropic’s surfaces, when a Fable 5 request is blocked by a classifier, it routes automatically to Opus 4.8 (claude-opus-4-8), which is priced at $5 / $25 per MTok — cheaper than Fable 5 — and has fewer false positives on routine coding and debugging.
This matters for your bill in a small but real way: a request that falls back to Opus 4.8 is metered at Opus 4.8’s lower rate, not Fable 5’s. So even after July 7, the occasional classifier reroute costs you less, not more. If you are seeing unexpected refusals or want to understand the routing, we cover it in detail in handling classifier refusals and the Opus fallback, and the full list of what changed in the redeploy is in Fable 5 redeployed: what changed.
For reference, here is how the three prices line up:
How to make the most of the included week (July 1–7)
Since the included window is genuinely no-extra-charge on your subscription, this is the cheapest Fable 5 will be for you if you are on Pro, Max, Team, or a select Enterprise plan. A few practical moves:
- Front-load big jobs. Run your largest Fable 5 tasks — long-context reviews, wide refactors, multi-file agentic runs — inside July 1–7 while they draw from included usage rather than usage credits.
- Decide on usage credits before July 7. If you want zero interruption on July 8, enable usage credits and set a spend cap now; the exact numbers are in what Fable 5 costs after July 7. If you would rather stay strictly within your subscription, leave them off and plan around your weekly reset.
- Trim the cost of what you keep running. If you do move to usage credits (API rates), prompt caching directly lowers the token count you pay for.
The bottom line: through July 7, 2026, Fable 5 is included for up to 50% of your weekly usage limits on paid plans — and after that it stays available via usage credits at standard API rates. Nothing shuts off. For more on the broader relaunch, start at the AI agents hub.
